Experiencing the Delta Works with Stong Winds

The 4th COASTHazar cohort (2025-2027) experienced the Delta Works in the Southwest of the Netherlands with strong winds. As part of the second semester at IHE Delft, the COASTHazar students visited the Delta Works in the southwest of the Netherlands. The excursion took place under stormy conditions, offering a fitting reminder of the forces that have shaped Dutch water management for centuries.

The Netherlands has a long history of protecting its low-lying landscapes from flooding. Following the devastating North Sea Flood of 1953, the country embarked on one of the largest hydraulic engineering projects ever undertaken: the Delta Works. This network of storm surge barriers, dams, sluices and dikes continues to protect millions of people while balancing flood safety, navigation, freshwater availability and environmental considerations.

For COASTHazar students, the visit transformed concepts discussed in lectures into real-world examples. Standing next to the storm surge barriers with strong winds showed the scale of the challenges that coastal engineers and researchers face, and the importance of designing infrastructure that can withstand extreme conditions.
