IHE Delft Institute for Water Education

IHE Delft is the coordinating institution of the COASTHazar Erasmus Mundus Master’s. Formerly known as UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, IHE Delft is the world’s largest international graduate water education facility, contributing to the education and training or water professionals, building and developing capacity in organizations active in the fields of water and environment. IHE Delft operates under the auspices of UNESCO as a Category 2 centre. Presently IHE Delft offers and coordinates four Erasmus Mundus programmes, all in the water sector, attesting its international vocation. IHE Delft Coastal Group is worldwide know for, together with Deltares, developing several coastal wave and sediment transport models, and for participating in the development of the DELFT3D model.

University of Algarve

The University of Algarve is located in Faro, in the most southern part of Portugal, facing the Ria Formosa, a lagoon and barrier islands system. It is by far the most international university of Portugal, with more than 25% of international students. The University of Algarve has considerable experience in coastal and marine studies, with particular emphasis on coastal erosion and management, including coastal evolution, risk assessment and risk management. Since 1993 the University of Algarve has been participating in Erasmus Programmes.

University of Cantabria

The University of Cantabria is located in Santander, in the North part of Spain. Together with its flagship IHCantabria, University of Cantabria has special expertise and knowledge on the behaviour of coastal zones and how they evolve in response to the main natural and anthropogenic threats. It develops methodologies and tools to characterize and diagnose coastal processes and integrated coastal planning, including the management and evaluation of natural and anthropogenic risks in coastal areas. The university has a particular international vocation, since it is one of the first universities in Spain to have been awarded as an “International Excellence Campus”.

Associated partners

The COASTHazar Master’s include 34 associated partners from academia, public institutions and private companies around the world. The partners, some from countries affected by coastal hazards, are stakeholders with whom the consortium universities have close collaborations. Associated partners will be invited to teach at some of the courses/modules, short courses and summer schools, and to deliver workshop seminars. They bring a real-world perspective and experiences of managing coastal hazards and related problems. With links to the job market, the associated partners will also bring a career orientation perspective. The partners will act as ambassadors of the programme.
